Onze Lieve Vrouw van Vlaanderen

Opening Night 29 October 2005

Chokri Ben Chikha bases his Our Lady from Flanders on autobiographical material: on the one hand the story of his Tunisian biological mother Miriam and on the other the Polish neighbour Maria who looked after him. Figuratively, it is about the mothers of Flanders and Tunisia, each with their religious traditions and cultures. By extension it deals with relations between East and West, and Christianity and Islam. Moreover, this production is steeped in a mixture of Arabian dancing and breakdance, Chopin and Flemish folk songs.

'The creators take the Belgian migrant problem out of its negative 'poor pitiful me' corner and portray multiculturalism in a light-hearted fashion, with a sense of humour and an ability to see things in their proper perspective.' (De Morgen)
